Asphalt is more flexible than concrete, but requires more maintenance. Mother Nature takes a toll on asphalt. If the surface does not drain properly, water gets into the gravel base and produces cracking during freeze and thaw periods. As the surface ages, you may notice them cracking or developing potholes. Surfaces sometime “alligator” — the sealcoat glaze cracks and looks similar to alligator scales or pottery. Alligator cracks are mostly cosmetic and do not affect the structural integrity of the surface.
